Former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to be named the Presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on August 11, Asian Mirror learns.

The decision will be announced at the SLPP national convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. Former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa will make the all-important announcement.

However, there are strong doubts over the eligibility of the former Defence Secretary to run as the Presidential candidate of the SLPP due to his dual citizenship.

A document was circulated on social media yesterday indicating that the US authorities have confirmed the renouncing of Rajapaksa's dual citizenship. However, it was later proven that the document was fake.
