Controversial Maths tutor Dinesh Amaratunga who was arrested over an assault on a van driver in Kalagedihena has been remanded till August 05.
Amaratunga and his bodyguard were arrested after they surrendered to the Kalagedihena Police over the incident, two weeks ago.
Acting IGP Chandana Wickremaratne directed the Colombo Crime Division to probe the incident where a van driver was assaulted in Kalagedihena yesterday by a group of VIP bodyguards travelling in two Defenders.
UNP MP Ashu Marasinghe also wrote to the Acting IGP urging a probe into the matter.
The CCTV footage of the incident was widely shared on social media platforms and many TV stations reported the incident with high prominence.
The Van driver was assaulted by a group of "VIP bodyguards" who came in two Defenders. The victim was assaulted by the group for not making way for the two Defenders.
The owner of one 'VIP Defender' which was involved in a brawl in Kalagedihena has been identified as a Maths tutor named Dinesh Amaratunga. He also conducts educational programmes on a couple of privately-owned TV stations.
