Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said his party would present a proposal for a constitutional amendment at the next Presidential election.
Speaking in Parliament, Rajapaksa said the current government had no mandate for a constitutional amendment.
The Opposition Leader also added that the proposed constitutional amendment would only be enacted following a referendum.
Rajapaksa promised constitutional amendments at both his Presidential election campaigns in 2005 and 2010.
Upon ascension to power, however, Rajapaksa did not pursue the promised amendments which included the abolition of Executive Presidency.
