Giving rise to suspicions whether the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is attempting to delay the Presidential elections, UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera said his party had presented a proposal to President Maithripala Sirisena to hold the Provincial Council elections without delay.
Addressing a press conference in Colombo, Amaraweeta said the SLFP was strongly in favour of holding PC elections with immediate effect.
He also added that there was no point in wasting the public money for the Presidential election, when the Executive President is at odds with the rest of the government.
"What we need right now os the abolition of the Executive Presidency," Amaraweera added.
However, holding the Provincial Council election at this point is likely to delay the much-awaited Presidential election.
