Dr. Mohammed Shafi Shiyabdeen, who was arrested by the Police in May over allegations of racially-motivated sterlization without consent, has been granted bail by the Kurunegala Magistrate.
The Attorney General's Department informed the court earlier today that the only charge charge against Dr. Shafi is under Section 311 ( Grievous Hurt ) of the Penal Code and nothing else.
The AG's Department further added that it was a bailable offence and raised no objection to bail.
As a result, the Kurunegala Magistrate released Dr. Shafi on bail on a cash bail of Rs. 250,000 and four sureties of Rs. 2.5 million.
Heavy security measures have been put in place around the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court to avoid any unruly incident.
