The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has decided to commemorate Black July every month, SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekera said.
The Black July in 1983 unleashed unprecedented violence on Tamils in Sri Lanka killing thousands of Tamils and displacing over 100000. The UNP, which ran the state machinery at the time, is considered by many as the main culprit of violence.
Jayasekera said the first commemorative event of Black July will take place on July 27 under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena. The event, however, takes place 36 years after the breakout of violence
All political partied will be invited for the event, Jayasekera said adding that the objective of this event is to ensure that there are no such incidents in the future.
