UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera today said his party would explore the possibility of forming another coalition if it failed to strike a deal with the Sri Lanka Podujana Party (SLPP).

"Our MPs will not join the SLPP or the UNP if the discussions do not bear fruit. We will still try to form a common front with other parties representing Parliament," Amaraweera said.

He added that the SLFP would also seek the possibility of forming an alliance with the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and the Janatha Vimukthu Peramuna (JVP).

However, both the JVP and the JHU are fiercely critical of the conduct of President Maithripala Sirisena's conduct.

Amaraweera last week indicated that his party would enter into an agreement with the SLPP to contest elections as a common front.

The statement did not elicit a positive response from the seniors of the SLPP.
