Railway unions called off their trade union action following discussions with Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga a short while ago.
The union action was triggered by the resignation of the General Manager of the Railway Department who quit his post claiming he came under pressure to resinstate a union official who was suspended for being drunk while at work.
Railway unions struck work after the General Manager tendered his letter of resignation to the Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. As a result, railway services across the country came to a standstill.
During the discussion, the Minister has assured non-interference in the union leader's issue and agreed to reinstate the resigned General Manager.
