A Cabinet sub-committee has been appointed to examine the recommendations given by the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee on the institution referred to as the Sharia University in Batticaloa.

The sub-committee comprising the Ministers of Finance; City Planning, Water Supply and Higher Education; National Integration, Official Languages, Social Progress and Hindu Religious Affairs; and Development Strategy and International Trade.

The Parliamentary Committee recommended that the institution in Batticaloa be taken over by the government.

Former Eastern Province Chief Minister M.L.A.M. Hizbullah is under investigation over the construction of the institution.
