A Gazette extraordinaire has been issued declaring railways as an essential service.

The Gazette comes in the wake of a trade union action carried out by railway unions demanding the government to resolve their salary anomalies.

Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said measures were underway to recruit suitable retirees of the railway Department to ensure the stability of the service.
