Dr. Mohammed Shafi Shiyabdeen, who is currently under the Criminal Investigations Department's detention, has filed a Fundamental Rights petition challenging his detention.

The Acting IGP, the Attorney General, the Director of the CID, the DIG in charge of Kurunegala Kurunegala and several others have been named respondents in the case.

In his petition, Shafi has requested the Supreme Court to declare his detention illegal.

Shafi, who was previously attached to the Kurunegala hospital, was taken into custody by the CID after hundreds of women levelled allegations against him over unconsented sterilization
