The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has written to President Maithripala Sirisena against the latter's decision to sanction death penalty for those involved in drug related crimes while in prisons.

In a letter, Deepika Udugama, the head of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, had said the decision to sanction death penalty would farm the country's international image. 

The Commission also requested the President to strengthen the prisons system in Sri Lanka, without allowing various elements to carry out unlawful activities while in prison. 

The commission also added there was an outcry in favour of death penalty due to loopholes in the law enforcement system in Sri Lanka.

The Commission stated some major drug dealers were protected by political bigwigs in the country making it difficult for the law enforcement machinery to crackdown on drugs.
