The Sri Lankan government has announced stricter regulations on the use of Galle Face Green, a site historically significant for political protests, including the Aragalaya movement in 2022. In a recent Cabinet decision, the government confirmed that the iconic space, managed by Sri Lanka Ports Authority, will now be reserved exclusively for religious activities, festivals, and musical events that meet specific criteria. Political gatherings, however, will no longer be permitted.
This policy reversal comes after a 2023 decision under the previous administration, which limited Galle Face to religious events only. The government highlighted that maintenance costs for the area, which amount to around Rs. 2.5-3.0 million annually, would be used to enhance the grounds for tourism and cultural activities, promoting it as a secure and attractive space for both locals and international visitors.
The new regulations were approved following a proposal by Minister Vijitha Herath, who highlighted the importance of maintaining Galle Face as a "clean and green" environment, focusing on systematic and transparent management.
