The President's Media Unit said President Maithripala Sirisena today called for a "Systemic System" to strengthen consumer protection in Sri Lanka. 

"President expressed concern over apparent excessive profits made by intermediaries and businesses on some goods and services and the need to have a systemic system for strengthening consumer protection.=," the President's Media Unit said in a release this morning. 

According to the release, the President had made these remarks addressing a National Economic Council meeting at the Presidential Secretariat today. 

The President, according to the release, had said that foreign exchange remittances to the country should be free of any taxes and levies.

"Higher remittances will also help build up foreign exchange reserves," he had said. 

The President, at the meeting, had instructed relevant ministries to take quick action to resolve issues arisen at the  Mahawatta area regarding the construction of the new pipeline from Colombo Port to the Kolonnawa refinery.

The Electricity Sector Master Plan prepared by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the Ministry of Power and Energy was also presented to the President by the Japanese Ambassador Kenichi Suganuma, the statement said.
