A Police Constable who was hospitalized following a shootout with a criminal gang this morning succumbed to his injuries. 

Three Policemen and a civilian were injured and admitted to hospital following the shootout. A Police Sergeant, our sources said, was in a critical condition. 

The shootout occurred  when the criminal gang attempted to rob a jewelry shop in Matara. 

The Police later arrested Chamara Indrajith the chief suspect in the robbery and the shooting.
