Sashitharan's husband, Elilan, was a stalwart of the LTTE. Sasitharan said her husband was disappeared after he surrendered to the Sri Lanka Army. 

Commending on recent developments in the North, Sasitharan expressed concerns over the arrest of human rights activists Ruki Fernando and Father Praveen Mahesan in Kilinochchi. The arrest came a few days after the arrest of disappearance activist B. Jeyakumari who allegedly harboured a criminal.

"I am hoping for strong resolution, creating an int'national commission of inquiry into war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide," Sasitharan said.

Sjhe also commended the work undertaken by the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights on Sri Lanka's human rights front.
