Prof. Colvin Gunaratne, a veteran medical practitioner, is to be appointed as the new Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council, informed sources at the Health Ministry said. 

They added that Prof. Carlo Fonseka had not shown inclination to continue as the SLMC Chief for another term. 

Prof. Fonseka, on Monday, pleaded the SLMC, not to launch a strike seeking a service extension for him. Fonseka had called health Minister Rajitha Senaratne yesterday and thanked the latter for his cooperation during Fonseka's tenure as the SLMC Chairman.

Prof. Fonseka said he could not discharge the duties of the position due to his current medical condition.
