The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) treated daily wage workers attached to the Hambanthota cricket stadium in a disgraceful manner, when it asked them to remove their trouser before paying salaries.
The SLC's argument was that the trousers belonged to the Cricket organisation and the workers should return them before collecting daily wages. The trousers had the Sri Lanka Cricket logo.
As a result, the workers had to loiter in their undergarments as they did not have clothes to go home.
"We waited in our undergarments till it was dark. Then we headed home," a ground staff member said.
"This was ridiculous. The trousers were given to us when the tournament started. We weren't even informed that trousers would be collected after the tournament. So we didn't bring extra clothes," he added.
Ground staff workers get Rs. 1000 a day for a cricket tournament. Nearly 100 workers currently work attached to the Hambanthota cricket stadium, as daily wage workers.
