The issue surrounding the Uma Oya Multipurpose project will be resolved giving priority to residents, President Maithripala Sirisena said, at a meeting with stakeholders at the President’s official residence on June 30.
President Sirisena said a German specialist was currently looking into the issue and a team of specialists from Norway was due in August to look into the matter and promised a speedy resolution.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Bandarawela on Wednesday (28) protesting the Uma Oya Multipurpose Project that they allege has damaged as many as 7037 homes and leaks over 8 million litres of water a day.
Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera, Harin Fernando, Vijith Vijithamuni Soysa, Uva Province Chief Minister Chamara Sampath Dasanayaka, Uva Provicial Councillor Samantha Vidyarathna, Anura Dissanayake Secretary for the Mahaweli Development & Environment, Deputy Project Director of the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development project P.B. Amarasekara and others participated on this meeting.
