Sri Lanka is bound to take actions to eliminate violence against the women in workplaces according to the international conventions it has entered.
Accordingly, the proposal made by Chandrani Bandara, Minister of Women and Child Affairs, to appoint committees of senior officials in each ministry to eliminate gender based violence in all workplaces, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Gender-based violence is one of the most prevalent human-rights violations in the world. More than 35% of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence and between 40% and 50% of women experience unwanted sexual advances, physical contact or other forms of sexual harassment at work.
