President Maithripala Sirisena stresses that the current electoral system has to be changed to meet the standards of corruption and fraud free elections. The President was speaking at the Technical Session of the National Summit of Anti-corruption which was held in Colombo.
As a result of the district electoral system the candidates are unable to meet the public individually. Instead, they spent a large sum of money for publicity campaigns. The President also pointed out that preferential voting system has resulted huge corruption in the country.
Hence, it is compulsory to uproot preferential voting system. The President urged the need of reinstating first past the post electoral system.
