Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka warned that globalization is finished and a wave of nationalist protectionism was sweeping through the world, starting from Russia's Vladimir Putin and spreading towards Asia across Donald Trump in US and new movements in Paris and Germany.
Speaking at an event in the Dharmavijaya Foundation, Ranawaka said that the UK chose this new protectionism by voting to leave the EU. Donald Trump has declared that he will leave the international trade agreements such as the TPP and the NAFTA, moving towards protectionism.
Furthermore, Marine Le Pen in France has become a powerful force in that country and a new nationalist movement in Germany, the AfD, has threatened to become another powerful force. Interestingly, both the nationalists of France and Germany are led by women, he added.
Whether the nationalists win the forthcoming elections next year or not, they have already become a force to reckon with in these countries, Ranawaka added.
This nationalism has also spread to Japan, where the government is moving towards re-militarization, said Ranawake.
