US President-elect Donald Trump has 'upset' Sri Lanka's plans, if any, to join the Trans Pacific Partnership by saying that he will pull out of the TPP 'on the first day' in office.

Trump released a video laying out actions he would take on his first day in office on January 20, including his announcement of a full withdrawal of the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership by presidential executive order. Trump had campaigned for the US presidency on a pledge to pull out of the 12-nation trade deal, repeatedly referring to it as a job-killing "disaster."

"I've asked my transition team to develop a list of executive actions we can take on day one to restore our laws and bring back our jobs," the US president-elect said in a video message outlining priorities for his first 100 days.

"On trade, I am going to issue our notification of intent to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a potential disaster for our country," he said.

"Instead, we will negotiate fair, bilateral trade deals that bring jobs and industry back onto American shores" Trump added.

Other leaders involved in the TPP, including the Japanese Prime Minister have voiced concern about the situation. Without the support of the US, the TPP would effectively be dead.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, on November 10, said during the budget speech that the government plans to join the TPP and other trade agreements.

The TPP currently involves 12 countries on either side of the Pacific.
