Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that the expenditure allocated to education under the 2017 Budget is due to the fact that Rs 32 billion of the 2016 expenditure is still unused.

Even under the reduced expenditure, it is more than what the government spent for education in 2014, Karunanayake said.
