They want the Obamas back. After Donald Trump’s shock win over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election on Tuesday, November 8, some people are already urging Michelle Obama to run for president in 2020.
For millions of Americans left truly dispirited not to see the country’s first woman president in history, Hillary Clinton has given voters a glimmer of hope that the "highest and hardest glass ceiling" will still be broken in the near future.
The current first lady, 52, has become one of the most beloved political figures in recent history during her husband Barack Obama’s eight years in the White House.
In Ms Clinton’s concession speech hours after she lost to Donald Trump, she thanked both Barack and Michelle Obama for their support and for what they had achieved during their eight years in the White House.
"To Barack and Michelle Obama, our country owes you an enormous debt of gratitude," she said.
Mrs Obama was a fierce advocate for Ms Clinton on the campaign trail and spoke strongly against Mr Trump, saying his bragging about sexual assault in a leaked 2005 video "shook her to the core".
"We thank you for your graceful, determined leadership that has meant so much to so many Americans and people across the world."
Michelle was pretty much the coolest first lady ever, whether she was belting out tunes with James Corden for his Carpool Karaoke, advocating for and inspiring women, or just being a mom to her daughters, Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15. She worked tirelessly to combat childhood obesity, help military families and further education for all. Not to mention she’s become a style icon who shows up to every engagement looking classy and chic.
The potential first shots of the next campaign were fired online in the hours after Donald Trump's victory became clear when hundreds of thousands took to social media to urge the current first lady to run for President in 2020.
Soon after the election results, dismayed social media users began calling on Michelle to run for president in 2020 with the hashtag #michelle2020. “It’s not too early to start the Michelle Obama 2020 campaign is it? #MichelleObama #Michelle2020,” one tweeter wrote. Another pointed out that if she became POTUS it would be extra historic. “On a good note now Michelle Obama can attempt to break two glass ceilings as the first black female president #Michelle2020,” one person posted.
Despite her built-in fan base, Michelle has repeatedly insisted she will never run for political office. Her husband reiterated that last month while speaking to Sway Calloway on the Sway in the Morning radio show. “She will never run for office,” he said. “She is as talented and brilliant a person as there is and I could not be prouder of her, but Michelle does not have the patience or the inclination to actually be a candidate herself."
