M.K. Sivajilingam, Northern Provincial Councillor stated that merger of the Northern and Eastern Provinces is non-negotiable. He stated that "we are not even ready to talk about dividing the North and East". It is indivisible, and it is non- negotiable, if it should remain as one unit or not, he said.
From S.J.V. Chelvanayagam to the LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, a solution, based on a merged North and East has been continuously raised. They considered the North and East as the homelands of the Tamil speaking people, Sivajilingam said.
He further states that "let Minister Mano Ganesan obtain autonomy for the people of the plantations, and if he believes that we are capable of obtaining a North and East merger. We are ready to work towards the goal". Recently Minister Mano Ganesan stated that there seems to be less chances for a North and East merger under the new Constitution.
