Maligawatta based group called Sri Lanka Thawheed Jama'ath (SLTJ), yesterday staged a protest march in Maligawatta, Maradana against the move to amend the Muslim Marriage Act as a requirement to regain GSP+ from the European Union.
The protesters stated that as long as other customary laws such as Thesawalamai and Kandyan laws remained unchanged, Muslim law should also not be altered.
Some of the placards said that setting up of a minimum age for marriage was not practical and its a violation of rights of Muslim women. Since it is allowed by Sharia Law, they stated that it is against their rights. To protect thier rights they will take extreme measures, further stated SLTJ members.
Among the protesters, women were holding such placards.
It was seen that even young children took part this protest, which was highly criticized in social media.
