The proposed pension scheme for Migrant workers will be effective from January 1, next year.
A Committee was appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2015 to propose a pension scheme for migrant workers. Accordingly, the proposal made by Thalatha Athukorala, Minister of Foreign Employment, to implement the pension scheme prepared by the Committee and to make required amendments to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Act in this regard, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The legal draftsman will draft an act for the proposed pension scheme.
The required funds ieRs two billion is available in the Kuwait Compensation Fund of the SLBFE. Therefore under this proposed pension scheme a budget allocation is not needed.
