Until recently using Sinhala websites were really difficult as the fonts were not visible. This issue has been resolved through Google Web Fonts as they have now introduced Sinhala Fonts.
This has been initiated by a group of creators called Mooniak under the patronage of father of Sinhala Fonts, Pushpananda Ekanayaka.
Mr. Ekanayaka stated that it was really difficult to develop in the beginning as the technology was not developed and internet access was not possible.
Pathum Egodawatta from London discussed how Mr. Ekanayaka and Mooniak has tussle through and created the new font.
According to him, the font was created as Google wanted to include Sinhala to web fonts in 2014. As a result the font was created according to international standards.
According to Mooniak blog, Abhaya Libre is the third font project Mooniak has started with support form Google Fonts. The new font will be released under name Abhaya Libre. The font outlines are being improved and there are slight changes in design.
In Spanish 'libre' means freedom. As per Abhaya Libre if free to be used or distributed by anybody. This is to develop the idea of 'free codes'.
Mr Ekanayake has worked with Argentinian font designer Sol Matas, an award winning type designer based in Berlin, is working on the Latin in this project.
Mr Egodawatta further mentioned that all information regarding the process of creating the fonts is stored in GitHub.
New Sinhala, Tamil and English uncodes are under construction and the process is being supported by Ayantha Randika, Kosala Senaviratne and Sivapuran.
Now you can access these completely free fronts through fonts.google.com.
