A JVP Provincial Councilor accused former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga of occupying the head table and even leading the meeting at the Gampaha District Development Committee despite having no authority to do so.
This meeting took place yesterday with the participation of several MPs of the district. Kumaratunga was also in the head table and was actually heading the meeting which caused the uproar.
The JVP council asked for an explanation as to why she is occupying the head table, let alone leading the meeting. The explanation given was that she was invited as a former president.
Speaking to the media later, the JVP provincial councilor said that the District Secretary and the elected representatives should take the head table at this meeting. Kumaratunga cannot be there since she does not have any responsibility within the district as an elected official or a state official, he said.
Just days ago, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was criticized for inspecting the Morgahakanda Dam, even though he is now not in the government. Although Kumaratunga heads the office on reconciliation, she has no responsibility or official authority in the Gampaha District.
