Sri Lanka has been ranked as the 5th country with most generous people in the world by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index 2016.
According to the report released by CAF, 57% of Sri Lankans are charitable people. Sri Lanka was ranked 8th last year.
The CAF World Giving Index, now in its seventh year, is a leading authority on global generosity. By measuring three different kinds of giving, it provides a simple and universally understood picture of charitable behaviour across the world.
The CAF World Giving Index is scored by averaging the percentage of people in each country who donated money, volunteered or helped a stranger in the previous month. For this year’s report 140 countries were surveyed as part of the Gallup World Poll. This allows us to gain data that is representative of the charitable behavior of 96% of the world’s population over the age of 15 (or about 5.1 billion people).
Myanmar tops the CAF World Giving Index for the third year running, followed by USA and Australia.
The UK is the most generous country in Europe, followed by Ireland and the Netherlands. In many countries, men are significantly more likely than women to engage in volunteering or helping a stranger. However, at the global average level, there’s little difference between men and women when it comes to donating money.
Iraq ranks highest for helping a stranger for the second year running.
