Sri Lanka Cricket is set to introduce annual domestic contracts for close to 70 cricketers, across the youth, emerging and senior categories hoping to encourage them to press for places in the Sri Lanka team. The new contract system does not include the current national players already contracted with the board.
However, Sri Lanka Cricket has yet failed to reveal the chosen list of cricketers.
It is reported that there are at least six senior cricketers are enlisted who have not met selection criteria. Furthermore, Nuwan Kulasekara has not made the senior cricketers list even though he is within the criteria.
Even though the emerging cricketers category contains some real talent it seems some have made the selection due to favoritism, sources in SLC said. Even National Selection Committee has not been consulted regarding the selections. Most were offered the contract as they agreed to play for the cricket clubs which are represented by the board officials. Due to this many talented players lost their chance to make the list.
Nevertheless, SLC stresses that all cricketers must sign the annual contract before the Zimbabwe tour.
Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara called for an inquiry regarding these serious suspicions.
