National Freedom Front Spokesman Mohomad Muzammil said that the 'Sirisena clique' of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party could fall to third or even fourth place in the Local Government Elections if they are held.
Speaking at a press conference today, Muzammil said that this was the sole reason for the repeated postponement of the elections by this government.
Recalling State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena's statement that the LG Elections will not be held before June 2017, Muzammil said that some local government bodies would be denied elected representation for thirty months, even if the election is held by that time.
He added that elected representatives would have done better to serve the people at a time of a crisis such as the drought which has currently gripped the dry zone.
Muzammil said that the results of the Cooperative Society Elections were a portrayal of the local people's disillusionment with the 'Sirisena-clique'. The recent elections in these societies have seen some near clean sweeps by the Joint Opposition, and the 'Sirisena clique' was reduced to just one or even zero seats.
