Deputy Director of Department of Meterology Anusha Warnasooriya says inter monsoon rains are expected by the next weekend. Therefore showers may occur in North and Eastern provinces by Thursday. The inter monsoon period will prevail till the latter part of next month. However the Director added that there will be a decrease in the rainfall usually received under the inter monsoon conditions.
Meanwhile Director General of the Department of Irrigation Saman Weerasinghe says the supplying of water for the cultivation activities of the Maha Season will have to be delayed till next month. The drought has affected 16 districts. Chairman of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board K. Ansaar says his institution is providing free drinking water to the people in those districts. The Board has been able to provide water continuously. However people living in higher grounds may experience a delay when receiving water due to the increased consumption. The Board provides two million cubic meters of water daily.
There was even an instance where salt water being mixed with the water of Kalu Ganga. However that situation has been brought under control. The chairman added if it reoccurs the board will provide water using bowser trucks.
He also urged the general public to use water sparingly.
