The Institution of Engineers of Sri Lanka has organized an annual field trip to a place where there are "men only" areas.
The field visit takes place on Sunday October 16 to Broadlands Hydropower Project in Kithulgala.
"Project authorities have informed that according to the Chinese traditions, ladies are not supposed to enter the underground areas and hence the female participants are kindly requested to honor this requirement" the announcement said.
Therefore, while the lady engineers will not be barred from the trip, they will not be allowed to visit the underground sectors of the project. Therefore, it will be a partly "men only" field trip.
Incidentally, the CEB, a government entity, owns the premises although the Chinese are involved in the construction of the power plant. The project was launched by a woman, the then minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.
