Remains of a prehistoric era burial site has been discovered from the path way Dewalapola Ananda Maha Vidyalaya, during an excavation conducted yesterday (28). These remains believed to be 3000 years old according to Senior Lecturer Mangala Katugampola from Department of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya.
Excavation took place according information based on a belief among the locals regarding an ancient burial ground. This process started from 15th September with the official approval of Director General of Archaeology and monetary contribution of Research & Publications Division of University of Kelaniya.
Clay chambers were found near the surface of the ground. Inside canoe shaped chambers clay barrels were found filled with ash.
Similar burial sites have been discovered from Uda Ranchamadama and Kalotuwawa. Another has been reported from Gaspe area. Unearthed remains are to be determined the age by Carbon Dating. According to Mr Katugampola this kind of burial sites are found mainly in Wet and Intermediate Zones of the country.
He further mentioned that this newly revealed remains would help to get a clearer picture of the life and culture of prehistoric era.
