Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga calls for a change in the nation with the help of leaders who can add value to the society.
She was delivering memorial speech yesterday at Mahaweli Center on the birth centenary of late Vivienne Goonewardane.
Kumaratunga said that only a constitutional change would not bring real change to a country. She called for a wide social movement that can add values to the society and bring about change in policies which form base for constitution.
Recalling services rendered by late Vivienne Goonewardane, the former president said that she made a revolution in an era in which girls were not allowed to seek university education.
Vivienne Goonewardana, commonly known as "Vivi" was a pioneering female figure in Sri Lanka's left movement. She was a member of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party and the wife of Leslie Goonewardana. Both the Goonewardana's were former MPs.
"Vivi" was born on September 18, 1916, and passed away on October 3, 1996.
