Provincial Councils will be introduced the 25 per cent women politicians' representation, according to the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faizer Mustapha.
The ministry recently convened a discussion in this regard. Representatives from the US Embassy, Australian High Commission, and International Foundation of Electoral Systems, Deputy Minister Anoma Gamage, and Deputy Chief of the Prime Minister's Staff Mrs. Rosi Senanayake also participated.
Minister Mustapha following the instructions of the President and Prime Minister will initiate several reforms in provincial council institutions. The 25 per cent women representation will be carried out parallel to this. "This 25 per cent quota should not be the spouse or a relation of a politician. We will also provide a regular training for those who join politics", minister said.
According to Mrs. Senanayake, there must have anattitudinal change in the society in this regard.As well a program is needed to mentally, and financially strengthen the women who intend to join politics.
