The Ministry of Fisheries has taken measures to construct new jetties in Kudawella, Mirissa and Galle fishery harbours on the 12th September eradicating many issues confronted by the fishers of Southern Province for a long time.
This programme is conducted by the Development and Rehabilitation of Fishery Harbours and Anchorage Sites Project of the Ministry of Fisheries and scheduled to be inaugurated under the patronage of Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
Construction of jetties in the said 3 fishery harbours costs 317 million and it has been planned to spend Rs 114 million for Kudawella harbour, 103 million for Mirissa harbour and 100 million for Galle harbour.
Minister said that the incumbent Yahapalana government has come up with the decision of improving such infrastructure considering the contribution made by the fisheries industry to the livelihood development of the fisher community and likewise to the national income of the country.
Nearly 450 large scale vessels in these harbours leave for deep sea fishing daily and the facility of mooring large scale vessels was so far unavailable.
