Death penalty convicts in Sri Lankan prisons exceeds 1000.
Commissioner General of Prisons Nishantha Dhanasinghe stated that 1017 convicts are currently on death row. 667 have appealed.
He further said that convicts are taken out of the cell for half an hour a day for exercise. They could use that time to avoid exercise or for playing sports such as cricket.
He added that the convicts are allowed to see the family and relatives once a week and food should be consumed within the premises.
There have been no executions since 1976, although death sentences were handed down continuously. These were automatically commuted to life in prison.
