The fire at a laboratory in the Moratuwa University has been caused by the leak of a chemical, the Moratuwa Fire Brigade said.

It was earlier suspected that lightening may have caused the fire.

The fire broke out last night at the laboratory while it was raining heavily in the area. This led to the initial suspicion of lightening being the cause.

Serious damage was caused by the fire to a section of the laboratory.
