Sri Lankan government had earlier stated that the Ukraine government had complained to the Sri Lankan Ministry of External Affairs that Weeratunga was involved in illegal firearms smuggling with Ukrainian separatist groups during the Rajapaksa era.
Refuting the allegations made by the Sri Lankan government, Weeratunga stated that he currently lives in Ukraine and there were no investigations against him.
Even if there were any investigation, the government of Ukraine is perfectly capable of carrying out any such investigation without the help of the Sri Lankan government, Weeratunga said.
Weeratunga also refuted the allegations that he was involved in the death of a former employee of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia, Noel Ranaweera. He added that criminal proceedings against two Russians have ended over the said incident.
Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Rajitha Senaratne recently stated at a cabinet press conference that Weeratunga must be arrested as soon as possible.
