President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Senior DIG SM Wickremesinghe as the acting IGP.

Former IGP N.K. Illangakone retired from service yesterday.

The names of three senior DIGs have been recommended to the Constitutional Council to be considered for the post of IGP. They include Senior DIGs SM Wickramasinghe, Pujuth Jayasundera and Chandana Wickremaratne.

The Constitutional Council is yet to make the final decision on the appointment.
