National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday requested the Speaker to consider his party's request and give the party recognition as an independent entity in Parliament.
Speaking at the Parliament yesterday, he informed that a letter was recently sent to the Speaker making the request and the Speaker is yet to act as requested.
Weerawansa said that the request was made based on previous instances where such recognition was given and also on a directive made by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
Jayasuriya had earlier stated that the SLFP MPs in opposition could be recognized as a separate entity if they break out of the SLFP, Weerawansa said.
The Speaker said that he has to discuss the matter with the party leaders.
However, Weerawansa pointed out that in earlier cases the Speakers acted on their discretion. When the JVP walked off from the UPFA, this recognition was given without consultation with party leaders, he said.
