Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Frontline Socialist Party are to commemorate their fallen comrades of the JVP at their respective April Heroes' Day events today.
On 5th April 1971 that the JVP led its initial uprising against the then regime of Sirima Bandaranaike. JVP-led youths attacked more than 100 police stations throughout the country were able to capture and hold several towns and rural areas for several weeks, but it ended unsuccessfully when they were recaptured by the armed forces.
Some reports suggest that nearly 10,000 young people died and more than 15,000 were arrested during the struggle. Heroes of the JVP who were deceased and arrested for struggling to reform the country at the 1971 insurrection are to be commemorated for the 45th year today.
The three main ceremonies of JVP are to be held at Panadura Town Hall, Anuradhapura Town Hall and Deniyaya. The commemoration at Panadura will be chaired by the General Secretary of the JVP Tilvin Silva while the commemoration at Anuradhapura will be chaired by the Member of the JVP Political Bureau member K.D. Lalkantha. The commemoration at Deniyaya will be chaired by the JVP Information Secretary, Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath. All three commemorations will commence at 3.00 p.m. on the 5th.
The events organized by the FSP are to be held at Sanasa Hall in Gampaha, Karandeniya Public Hall, Kegalla Post Office Auditorium, Badulla Workers Union Office, and at Dambulla City Hall respectively.
