Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reiterated the role of the internet in recruitment activities by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria terrorist group, which he says is a threat to his region and his country.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, the Singapore PM said that the ISIS has proved far better at recruiting from his part of the world than al Qaeda ever was.
"In Singapore, he says, several people have gone to the Middle East, most of them “self-radicalized” via the Internet. More than 100 from Malaysia and about 500 from Indonesia have made their way to the Middle East. In fact, such has been the recruitment success, says Mr. Lee, that ISIS now has a battalion of Southeast Asian fighters called the Katibah Nusantara, or Malay Archipelago Combat Unit. The worry is that ISIS might use these fighters to set up a base in some remote and ungoverned part of Southeast Asia", the Wall Street Journal said.
Meanwhile in Sri Lanka, the government has said that that security agencies are vigilant on any terrorist related activity. However, the government does not recognize the potential threat that could come from the ISIS.
Some Sri Lankans have joined the ISIS in Syria, the Defence Secretary recently acknowledged. "But we do not have ISIS is Sri Lanka" he stressed. It is better to leave problems which do not affect us as they are, he added.
However, the JHU recently said that there was enough evidence to suggest the ISIS was active in Sri Lanka.
The ISIS, also calling itself the "Islamic State" is fighting to create what is calls an "Islamic Caliphate" ruled by the "Caliph", the leader of the ISIS, Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.
