Frontline Socialist Party Central Committee member Kumar Gunaratnam was sentenced for a one year prison term and a fine of Rs 50,000 by the Kegalle Magistrate's Court today.
He was arrested on November 4, 2015, on alleged immigration law violations and was in remand custody since then.
Gunarantam arrived in the island on January 1, 2015, a week before the 2015 General Election on a tourist visa. His visa expired on January 31, 2015.
He was a former member of the JVP, and was a leader of the JVP Trincomalee unit during the 1987-89 insurrection. He later broke away from the JVP in 2011, forming the People's Struggle Movement which later became the FLSP.
Gunaratnam was abducted in 2012 and later left for Australia, where he has obtained citizenship.
