Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe presented the resolution on the formation of a Constitutional Assembly to Parliament a short while ago.

Accordingly, a Constitutional Assembly comprising of all Members of Parliament is to be formed, with the objective of drafting a new constitution.

However, the 'Joint Opposition' which backs former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had earlier opposed this move, saying that a new constitution has to be drafted by a Parliamentary Select Committee.
