Propaganda Secretary of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Vijitha Herath today said that the mere introduction of a new constitution will not solve the people’s problems.

Speaking at a press conference in JVP headquarters today, he further said that the JVP would not support a constitution that divides the country.

The government must present a draft of the constitution to public before taking public opinion, said Herath, adding that the new constitution should ensure national and religious unity of the country and protect country’s territorial integrity, Herath stressed.

The government has announced that the Parliament will be transformed in to a Constituent Assembly for the drafting of a new constitution. The proposal to convert it to a Constitutional Assembly for this purpose will be presented to Parliament on January 9.
