Kolonnawa Urban Council Chairman Ravindra Udayashantha, who was in remand custody over the recent attack on Satyagraha campaigners at Meetotamulla, was released on a bail of two sureties of Rs. one million each by the Colombo Magistrate Court today.
The hearing of the Magisterial Inquiry had to be adjourned for ten minutes as an argument broke out between the lawyers of the aggrieved party and the Wellampitiya Police.
The aggrieved party complained that the police was biased in its investigations on the assault. They pointed out that the alleged perpetrators were not arrested.
Both parties expressed regret over the argument when the inquiry was taken up again.
The Kolonnawa Urban Council Chairman was arrested when he appeared at the last court hearing. The Additional Magistrate who presided the hearing on that day reprimanded the police for not arresting him earlier despite having witnesses.
Several Satyagraha campaigners, including Attorney-at-Law Nuwan Bopage, were hospitalized on December 27 following the assault. They were protesting against the garbage dump at Meetotamula.
